“A new artist is coming next summer”. With this message in its Twitter account Barça has confirmed the expected sign of Frankie De Jong from Ajax. After weeks of negotiations, De Jong’s arrival was confirmed and it could eventually rise to €86m.
“FC Barcelona and Ajax have reached an agreement for the transfer of midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who will be joining the Catalan club from 1 July 2019,” a statement on the club’s website read. “The cost of the transfer operation is €75m, plus a further €11m in variables. The player will be signing a contract for the next five seasons, through to 2023-24.”
Barça’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “With the arrival of Frenkie De Jong we add talent, youth and Barça style to our sporting project. We are convinced that he will be a key part of our team for years to come. Welcome, Frenkie!”
The highly-rated 21-year-old was also a target for both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, but the Catalan giants have now clinched the signing of their man.
From young promise to head team
De Jong joined Ajax from Willem II in 2015 and subsequently progressed through the club’s academy, making his first-team debut in 2017. He won his first international cap for the Netherlands last June and has already established himself as a key member of Ronald Koeman’s team.
De Jong will spend the rest of the season at Ajax, and will face Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16 tie next month.
