Last January, Northampton Town youngster Scott Pollock achieved his dream of becoming a pro footballer. He made his Football League debut for his local side, coming on in the first-half as the Cobblers lost 3-2 to Cambridge in front of a crowd of 4.489.
That figure may seem daunting to a teenager but Pollock is used to playing for an audience of almost 200.000 online and has also played in front of 34.000 people at Wembley.
That is some experience for such a young player and there are thousands of online fans who will be following his every move and one person, in particular, has been critical in his development.
Famous YouTuber Spencer Owen is the creator of Hashtag United and his channel launched a mission to find the best young footballers in the country, with the winner of the series gaining a place on their team.
“It was like an X Factor for football over eight episodes”, said Spencer’s brother, Seb Carmichael-Brown, who is also a club director. “Scott won the big public vote at the end. The audience absolutely loved him”.
A long way
Pollock was promoted to Northampton’s Under-18s last summer. By making his debut against Cambridge United after being recalled from a work experience loan at St Neots Town, he became the first player to make a first-team appearance after graduating through Northampton’s BTec football and education programme.
