Diego Simeone has previously made it very clear that one day he wishes to manage Inter but that day seems far away as per a report from Spanish newspaper Marca who detail that he is set to sign a new contract with Atletico Madrid.
Simeone previously negotiated a reduction in contract length around the time Inter were looking for a new manager in the lead up to Luciano Spalletti’s appointment but now looks set to remain working with the Spanish capital club at least for the next few years.
The Argentine has proved hugely successful in the Spanish capital after arriving in December 2011. And according to reports in Spain he is closing in on a new deal that will extend his contract beyond its current expiry in June 2020.
Radio MARCA report Simeone is close to agreeing terms which would make him the highest-paid person at the club, ahead of Antoine Grizemann. The Frenchman is currently the highest-paid person at Atletico after he signed a contract extension last June worth £17.5m until the summer of 2023.
According to Radio MARCA, from the coach’s side negotiations are such that the contract includes clauses that facilitate a possible exit in the case of not fulfilling the entire contract. The club understands that Simeone is a key piece to give stability to their project, with Gil Marin as the main supporter of this contract extension.
The 48-year-old has won seven major honours in seven years, including two Europa League titles and La Liga in 2014. He took Atletico to the final of the Champions League twice, where they were beaten on both occasions by fierce rivals Real Madrid. This year Atletico find themselves in the thick of the title race in Spain. They have 23 points from their opening 12 games and sit third, a point behind leaders Barcelona.
