Who is the top goalscorer active football player between international teams? Probably you may answer Cristiano (Portugal) or Messi (Argentina). And you would be right. But probably you would be wrong if someone asks you for the second top. Because this position belongs to an Indian footballer since this week.
Sunil Chhetri has standed between CR7 (1st) and Lionel Messi (3rd) after getting a double in the 4-1 Asian Cup win over Thailand. Now on 67 goals, he’s steered past Lionel Messi (65) and is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 85 goals for his country along his career.
The 4-1 against Thailand is India’s first victory in the Asian Cup since 1964. Now, they lead Group A ahead of UAE and Bahrain. Chhetri, who plays for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League, scored his sixty-seventh international goal in just over a hundred appearances.
Though India is the second biggest country in the world, the rise of football in the nation is still very much a work in progress and Chhetri is one of the best ways to improve that. The Indian ‘killer’ is a huge star in his native country and has won the AIFF Player of the Year on four occasions.
“I don’t take it too seriously. I mean there’s no comparison whatsoever between me and Lionel Messi or [Cristiano] Ronaldo”, he said. “But I’m very very honoured. I don’t take it for granted the kind of goals that I score for my country. Every time I get an opportunity, I’ll do my best to score for my country”, Chhetri added.
