Wayne Rooney added to his legacy of MLS magic with a ridiculous free-kick stunner for D.C. United against Orlando City on Sunday.
In the 30th minute of the matchup, Rooney launched the ball mere yards away from the corner flag. The kick whizzed into the top corner past a diving Brian Rowe and gave D.C. United a 2–0 lead on the road.
Rooney assisted the team’s first goal of the night, scored by Steven Birnbaum in the sixth minute. Dom Dwyer found the net for the Lions in the 65th minute to end the game 2–1. Rooney has now scored four goals in four Major League Soccer games so far this year.
Out of this world. It’s often hard to tell if those are shots or crosses. The kick appeared to be on frame with power, hoping somebody would get a head on it — but instead it’s a thing of beauty.
It reminded us a lot of the goals of one of our favorite free kick takers, Brazilian Juninho Pernambucano. The former Lyon star, who also played for clubs like Vasco de Gama and even MLS’ New York Red Bulls, used to terrorize teams.
An old friend
The match against Orlando it was also a special occasion for United and England’s all-time record scorer, mainly for how former Red Devils teammate Nani plays for Orlando City.
Ahead of the clash, the 32-year-old Portuguese winger revealed that he was excited for a “catch up” with Rooney. “It’s a long time since I’ve seen him. It will be a good time to catch up and talk a little bit”, he told CNN.
“We will enjoy seeing each other, hopefully put on a good show for the fans, challenge each other and, at the end, we can sit and chill out a little bit”.
